How to Accomplish a Goal in a Weekend: Niche Site Duel Challenge

How to Accomplish a Goal in a Weekend: Niche Site Duel Challenge

Over the last few weeks, I have been stressing how you can accomplish more of your goals in less time than you think (see here and here). The biggest hurdle is getting started, but once you do, accomplishing your goal becomes a reality in half the time you thought about attempting it.

I decided I might as well give you evidence of such if I am going to try and urge you to accomplish more. Jonathan Wondrusch of ByBloggers stated late last week that he was going to finish an outstanding eBook by weekend’s end (See the kickass cover here: link). Now, that is a major task, yet i knew it could be accomplished so I decided to join Jonathan in this challenge. However, I took a different approach.

I recently wrote an eBook entitled Destination X, which Jonathan edited, and I am a little burnt out on that process. I wasn’t quite sure what goal I should or could handle in a weekend until I was reminded of my monthly goal report and a buddy named Niall Doherty of Disrupting the Rabblement brought up his goal of building niche sites. The Weekend Goal was set.

How to Complete a Goal in a Weekend

Now, I knew nothing and now know just a little more than nothing about niche sites. However, I have wanted to get into building niche sites for quite some time. Establishing a niche site as another source of income would definitely help diversify the streams of income I do have.

To start this project, I went straight to the master Pat Flynn. See, back in August of 2010, Flynn joined a friendly competition with Tyrone Shum to see who could get to #1 for a random niche. Long story short, Pat did for Security Guard Training and has since been offered $10,000 for the site. Along with his niche site, Flynn has been guiding rookies (ME!) through the obstacles of starting this type of project. There are some incredible niche site projects out there (see Pat Flynn and other’s participating in the Niche Site Duel).

The reason I am giving this back story is because I have been following Flynn for years and his Niche Site Dual for 9 months, yet have never got going. That’s why I decided to take on building a niche site in a weekend a la Wondrusch and his eBook.

With all that said, I am here to help you complete your goals. So, I might as well start doing that.

The first suggestion I have for attempting to complete a goal in a weekend is to take 2-3 professional or extremely useful sources and work solely off of their suggestions and your past knowledge. You could spend hours on end reading different sites or books on how to accomplish whatever goal you have. Take those top 2-3 and do the best you can with them. Once the goal is complete, you can research further and improve upon that.

My approach to this was to, practically, copy everything the master niche site developer (Flynn) does and build upon that. So, I signed up for Market Samurai, watched every minute of his webinar (HIGHLY SUGGEST!) about 3 times to make sure I was doing everything properly. There is absolutely nothing wrong with copying the approach someone else takes. That’s why Pat provides his insight at Smart Passive Income and that’s why I wrote Destination X.

All told, I probably spent 12 hours this weekend to come to my finished product. Sure, it was longer than most other niche site developers, but I was trying to learn as much as possible so that future niche sites will be a breeze. The site development took the majority of the time as I was going through Pat’s video while applying. The content took about 4 focused hours. With that said, I have a lot of things to tweak, articles still to write and backlinking to learn. But…I built a niche site in a weekend and all because of one thing.

The One Thing that Accomplished My Weekend Goal

STARTING!

Sure, you wanted some much more enlightening tale about how I had this epiphany or something. Well, I didn’t. All I had was this desire to accomplish something in a weekend like jonathan of ByBloggers. The act of starting was the one thing that made this a reality.

The reason I shared this with you is because I want you to see how any goal can be accomplished in as little as a weekend if you just start. Starting always gets you moving in the right direction no matter how fast or slow you go. This could have been another lost weekend for me, but instead I built a site that can, possibly, generate income in the coming months.

Weekend Goal Lesson

Just get started!

Stop making excuses. Just take a step in the right direction. Start planning monday for when Friday afternoon hits so that when Friday does come, you are ready to dominate the weekend and actually accomplish something more than killing a 30 pack.

There’s a lot more to do, but this got me started and should be a good base to build from.

Congrats on getting it done in a weekend. The site looks great. I know nothing about Vitamix but after reading your main page I have a better idea. Gotta work on those article directories and web 2.0 properties. Good luck!

      Hey Benny—

Thanks…I definitely need to get into the article directory side of things now. However, getting that solid base of a site really helps me going forward.

What are you working on Benny?

      • Benny says:

        Hey David,

Sorry I should have made it more clear. I said you gotta work on getting those web 2.0 and article directory links as Pat suggested. Get those all important links.

congrats on the Mavs! I’ll be pulling for them in the finals since it looks like they’ll be facing the Heat.

  2. So this is random…

I am looking to get my gf a vitamixer and I thought, damn I have no idea since there are so many models. Ugh…

Then I see this is your niche site? Crazy amazing. I hope I find what I’m looking for!

  3. I did some work on a niche site this weekend, too, although I’m not ready to associate my name with it! I’ll be interested to see how this works out for you. I think there’s some money to be made in this if it’s done right.

Congratulations on getting started with this one. I’m always reading what you’re writing, even if I don’t comment.
