(This article starts corny, but ends with you accomplishing something in less than 15 minutes. My advice…READ THIS and DO AS I SUGGEST)

You failed at your goal yesterday. Actually, you failed at your goal the day before that too. Let’s face it. You have failed a lot. Luckily for you, this article doesn’t stop here.
Now look, I have failed millions of times. Everyone has. Failing happens. Failing is awesome simply because it means we are, at the very least, trying. However, there is a different type of failing that we need to address. That is the failure of not trying.
Who Cares About Then
Yeah, yeah, we have heard it before. You failed last time so why try again. Whether that’s starting a successful small business, running a marathon, leaving the grind, or some other random goal you have, just because you failed at accomplishing it last time doesn’t mean 1) you shouldn’t try again & 2) that you’re going to fail this time.
Who the hell cares about last time. We are looking forward from here.
Moving Forward
(Action Steps Coming Up…Be Prepared)
I am going to stop right there with all the You-Can-Do-It B.S. and get you to stop thinking about then and start thinking about now.
Now. One word. A very powerful word ‘NOW’ is. After you read this sentence, think for 5 seconds what is one goal you could start right now — Go!
Okay, so you now have an idea in your head of a goal you are going to start on ASAP. Now, we need to actually start.
Of that goal you thought up a few seconds ago, what are three action steps you can take to start a path to that goal? Write them down right now.
Did you write them down? I didn’t think so. Go ahead and do so before we continue.
Now, let’s do one of those action steps in the next 10 minutes. It could be an act that applies to your goal as simple as 10 push ups or calling a business for advice or mind-mapping your next six month project. Whatever it is, as long as it applies to the goal, do that one action for the next 10 minutes.
Stop! Go back and do that last step if you skipped it.
Now, look where you are. You have started a path to your goal.
Let’s look back just 15 minutes ago. THEN, you were not looking at what could be done or taking any action toward it. You were just reading a motivational post. NOW, you have actually established a short path that you can build upon towards a path of success.
That’s what moving forward is. Taking yourself out of the mindset that you are living in the failures of THEN and not living in the opportunities of NOW.
Where Are You Going
I ask myself this every day. I want to remind myself to stay focused on what I am doing with my NOW, so that later I don’t look back at the THEN and think how many opportunities I wasted. So, I pose the same question to you: Where are you going? Metaphorically of course.
I write this post not to talk down to you about all your failures. In fact, I love to point out failing because, like I stated earlier, if I am failing, I am trying. I wrote this post to get you to move forward. Live in the now and propel yourself to a future of achieving whatever.
You need to be asking yourself the following three things about ten times per day:
- What did I do then that I can learn from today?
- Where am I going from here?
- What am I doing right now to be where I want to be tomorrow?
You will fail. You will want to care about THEN. However, you will proceed to a life fulfilled simply by reflecting and acting upon those three mentioned questions.
NOW, it’s time to succeed.

Schucks...This one is super unique. No similar posts.

Haha..great post David.
Failing is a step to growth. We cannot learn to win without experiencing the sting of loosing.
I love how you put, “living in the failures of THEN and not living in the opportunities of NOW.” I myself get caught up in giving my attention to my mistakes and not paying attention to the bright spots of now.
As cliche and overused as the phrase goes, I really do believe every cloud has a silver lining. I don’t think anything that happens to you is bad. You grow from it. You become stronger. You learn. You experience. You live. You succeed…now!
Cheers!
Hey Chris—
Thanks for your thoughts.
I believe stopping, recognizing mistakes/failures, and learning from them is just as important as acting. Unfortunately, most people fall in-between that. They know they failed, but don’t learn from their mistakes and act, but not whole-heartedly.
Hope to hear more from you here at Life Excursion
