The Single Sentence that Changed My Life

The Single Sentence that Changed My Life

How often have you found yourself stuck? I would say I have found myself stuck a few hundred times in my life. In the past, I would rarely get out of this funk for a few days. Then I would feel better about life. A few days later, I would feel stuck again.

One night, I was sitting in my apartment doing nothing to move my life forward. I didn’t see a future in what I was up to and I was accepting mediocrity.

I got up from my leather lounge chair, walked into my room and stared at the map of Australia hanging on my while. At that moment it hit me.

What are You Doing Today…To Be in Australia Tomorrow?

That single sentence changed everything that I do. It made me refocus. It made everything more real. It made me understand that what I was doing today was drastically effecting the odds I was going to be in Australia ‘tomorrow’.

I scribbled this one-liner out on some notepad paper and posted on the doorway leaving my room. Every time I left that room, I would be reminded of what my goal was and that my actions at that moment would dictate my success and failure.

Today, I refer to this one sentence that I apply to my life for major life goals as The Pillar Declaration. The Pillar Declaration states the major focus of what you are doing and sets a promise to yourself so that the commitment has more value to you. (You can get it for FREE in the right sidebar)

That sentence was simple, concise, and direct and I never would have accomplished my dream of moving to Australia had it not been for that sign.

The Power of One Sentence

The power of that one sentence changed my life forever and it still does to this day. It happens all the time, but we often hear it, reflect for a few moments, and then move on. What if you held onto those powerful sentences more often? In the last 6 months, I have tried saving powerful sentences or thoughts that were one sentence or less within my Evernote and I reflect upon them frequently. It is amazing how powerful a few words can create so much action and accomplishment.

A couple of my twitter followers shared these one-liners as well and I thought I’d share them with you.

Awesome ladies!

These are both prime examples of how when we think harder about the words we develop and actually analyze the reason why we do &, more importantly, don’t act upon these words, they can impact our lives in major ways – small and large.

I was laying in bed after another day of not really accomplishing what I had meant to do when this sentence popped into my head. A little crass, but it has been kicking my ass for a couple weeks now:

Your excuses are going to seem really fucking stupid when you’re dead.

  3. Close the gap between action and awareness.

  4. Benny says:

To stay on track I going to start remembering this one…

Am I inventing things to do to avoid the important?

  5. Chris Barba says:

    David,

Wow, in an incredibly simple way, that one sentence gets at the heart of action and certainly kick complacency to the curbside.

I find it easy to complain and stress over why I’m not where I want to be in life right now, but with a focus on the adverse how can we really move past it?

I think your one sentence is the answer to that question. Great insight David.

    Cheers!
