$3.52.
That’s how much was in my bank account at one point when I had cut my arm to shreds with glass (on accident).
I was working a physical labor job, made low wages (with a college degree) and lived paycheck to paycheck. Then it got worse.
When my arm was cut by glass through to bone (while on the job), I had to go on workers compensation which paid roughly 60% of my meager wages and came extremely sporadically. That bank account of mine slowly whittled down to somewhere near $3.52 (I don’t know the exact figure, but that sounded roughly accurate). Sure, I’d get a workers comp check here and there, but I never knew when.
In other words, there was no room for error.
Either I survived or I died. Either way, there was no grey area.
The approach was as simple as establish the goal and do everything to make it a reality.
What If There Was No Room for Error
After this accident and subsequent lifestyle of ramen, I swore up and down that I’d never go back to such a way of life.
I lied.
Mind you, I have not placed myself in such a predicament as I was in 5 years ago, but I have definitely allowed the cushion to catch my fall.
You may ask what the cushion is. The cushion is security. The security to allow the mind to wander from what is truly wanted.
When I lived when there was no room for error, I lived with purpose, focus and meaning. I knew where I stood at all times. I knew how focused I had to be to “make it”.
Then that damn cushion showed it’s face again.
So I ask, what if there was no room for error? What if there was no cushion? How would you approach making your goal of surviving, growing, accomplishing a reality if you had no room for error?
My first thought is that many of us would fail. I am wrong though. More of us fail today with the cushion than if we had no room for error. We struggle to make more a reality when our reality isn’t as comfortable as it is.
The #1 Way to Approach Goals is…
…to not believe a cushion exists at all. Whether true or not, approaching as if there was no room for error will drastically increase the success rate.
When we choose to push ourselves to limits we find unbearable, we often achieve far more.
That is why I am adding a twist to each of my own goals going forward. I am putting myself on the high-wire each time going forward. If it is a significant goal, I am giving myself no other option, but to succeed. Failure will be clear as my tangible measurements will dictate what true success is.
I Preach Therefore I Act
One of the main reasons I decided to share this with you is because many of you may be wandering aimlessly like I state in the Life Excursion tagline. As I have said time and time again, the approach to your goal is just as significant to any other aspect.
With that said, we have learned to take the steps through Destination X, but have we changed the mindset to emulate success as being the sole outcome of such devotion?
I spew this all because I want each of us to complete goals once thought unattainable. However, as a few of you have noted, I have not fulfilled upon the promise of completing the goals I set for myself in the monthly reports. Therefore, I need to approach each of these and my myriad of other goals with the sense that there is no room for error. We each need to commit to this.
There will be more to come along these lines, but for now i am establishing this notion of the proper approach to goals. In the future, I will detail how I made success the only outcome.
As we go forward in achieving all we hope to, reflect on how you are approaching one of your goals. Think for a moment how your approach would change if there was no room for error. Then, start acting like that is the predicament you find yourself in. You will find yourself accomplishing each step of that goal in no time flash.
