Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life

By: Neil Strauss

Total Reading Time : 6-7 hours (~400 pages)

I have never read anything by Neil Strauss. I had heard his name off hand here and there. I had watched “The Pick-Up Artist” on VH1 which was based on his book ‘The Game’. After reading ‘Emergency’ I wish I would have read his previous books much sooner.

I caught a glimpse of what ‘Emergency’ was about in a blog by Tim Ferriss. Strauss realizes that between 9/11, Bush being voted president a second time, and the failure to help the many during Hurricane Katrina, he had to be prepared for the worst in life. He began by criticizing the crazy survivalists that he was researching. Slowly, but surely, after attending numerous survival camps and learning to do everything from kill a goat with a knife to becoming a dual citizen with a passport in St. Kitts, he realized he became on of the crazies he had originally critiqued. Strauss realizes the difference between being a survivalist and a nut who worries constantly about the worst is knowing that you can control fate.

I strongly suggest picking this book up. At worst, you will enjoy a good tail about one man’s quest to protect himself from everything. At best, you will realize that no one is going to save your life in a catastrophe except yourself.
