______________
I introduced the idea of living a life of adventure on Gip Plaster’s blog, So Much More Life. The idea is that it’s actually very easy and cheap to begin inserting little doses of adventure into your life. Many people equate living a simpler life with living a boring life. I soundly reject that notion and want to share a slew of tactics for getting a dose of simple adventure if your life. In the first installment I put forth the idea of actively learning something new everyday. Today, it’s all about food.
Life of Adventure #2: Fun With Food
Why food?
Can you name something else that you do multiple times every single day? I can, but I don’t want to write an article about it. We eat all the time and yet, most of the time we don’t think about it much. We all have our food routines that we rarely venture from. I’m not one to knock routine, but do you realize how many things there are to eat in this world?
Lets take a look at livening up the way we go about feeding ourselves!
- Go to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant: Some of the best Thai, Chinese, and other Asian food I’ve ever had has been at small restaurants in strip malls. I don’t remember where I read about this, but usually these areas have low rent and allow small family restaurants to thrive. These have the best food, not large chains.
- Order something you can’t pronounce: This can be done in conjunction with idea #1, as well. Any time you are at a restaurant and feeling like you need to be a little adventurous, order something you can’t pronounce. Nothing like living on the edge!
- Go to the grocery store and buy a fruit or a vegetable that makes you say, “What the hell is this?”: This might be tough to do if you’re already a savvy chef, but if you’re like me it usually isn’t hard to find something you’ve never seen before. Find that thing, find a recipe, and EAT IT.
- Use a website like SuperCook.com: Go to this website and put in all the ingredients you currently have in your pantry. This sweet tool will give you a list of recipes that you can make with what you currently have on hand (or just need a couple other ingredients to complete). I guarantee you will find a bunch of delicious recipes that you’ve never made or eaten before. How’s that for some easy adventure?
Finding the joy in the little things of life, like the food we put in our bodies, is such a simple way to regain a small sense of adventure. What’s the worst that could happen? You might try something you’re not a huge fan of? So what? You can always go back to your old routine if you crash and burn on one of these ideas. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, you might open a whole new world of food that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. Living a life of adventure is simple, cheap, and easy.

I often like to try new dishes in my favorite restaurants. It’s hard to try a new dish when I have a favorite already, but I’ve found several new favorites by simply trying something new.

Thanks for allowing me to guest post on Life Excursion, Dave! I hope the article gives your audience some good ideas to add some adventure to their own lives.
Cool ideas
I definitely agree that hole in the wall restaurants serve great food. My favorite Chinese restaurant where I’ve been eating for 15 years looks like, well, a hole in the wall. The decor hasn’t changed in forever but the prices have only increased very slightly. If only I could break away from the same 4 or so dishes I eat there. Gotta try #2 I guess.
Great article. Just shows that adventure could be just around the corner, off the beaten path. When I was in Malaysia I gave the family I was staying with total control over my diet. I ate what they ate Although I was reticent at first, seeing the joy it brought as they shared their culture and foods will be a memory I treasure for the rest of my life.
