Stop Making Excuses

Tonight, a fellow blogger who is doing big things in another niche and will remain nameless, asked me to kick him in the butt and help him lose weight and get in shape. So instead of just replying to his request, I thought it better to share my advice with everyone including my friend.
Being healthy is all up to you. I know you have heard that before, but it is time to stop making excuses. Seriously, what is good about being overweight and out of shape?
Is it the food? Really, because last time I checked I made an incredibly tasty dinner of grilled chicken with grilled pineapple, a side tossed (key point!) salad with corn, kidney beans, carrots, garbanzo beans and light dressing, all alongside a glass of sun-brewed iced tea. There were great tastes that were natural and this meal filled me up. So, don ‘t give me the excuse that good food isn’t tasty or even tastier than crap fast food which I do partake in every once in a while still.
Is it your energy? Really, because the last time I checked I can workout, get work done, make time to relax, hit the gym, and run in a day and sleep only 6 hours. For 2 years this was my Monday-Friday schedule: Wake at 5 AM – Go to the gym at 5:30 – Go to work at 7:30 – Go home and run at 5:00 pm – Eat dinner around 6:30 – Go to the gym again at 7:45 – Relax and do household work until 10:30 or 11. Like I said, I did all of this for 2 years. During this time, I weighed 182 lbs with a 6′2″ frame, ran a half marathon in 1:27:00, got third place in a 10k mud run with a mountain climb, and had the best abs I have ever had (I miss them abs). How did I do it? I ate healthy and focused on my tasks at hand. Eating healthy and working out causes you to sleep better when you are sleeping and need less of it. Don’t believe me? Try it.
Is it your commitments? Do you feel like there isn’t enough time in the day? Well, part of that feeling is that you are out of shape and unhealthy. The healthier you are, the more you can do. Your body is like a car except much smarter. If you never change you oil or filters and let your car just run down, obviously, it isn’t going to run at tip top shape. Same goes for your body. To make sure you have the time to get to all of the commitments you signed up for you first need to address your health. Make time for your health and fitness and you will have much more time to do the things you love. Once again, I can’t stress this enough. Your health and fitness MUST COME FIRST in your life before you make your other commitments a priority.
It all comes down to STOP MAKING EXCUSES. Once you have done that, use the following motivational tips to start up your new healthy and fit life:
LifeEx Action Steps:
- Eat a big breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day so do not skip it. Include a fruit, carb’s, and a large glass of water.
- Drink only water. Stop wasting calories on drinks. Drink water all day and you will not only feel better, but you will lose weight quickly. It flushes out the crap you have been putting into your body
- Make 30 minutes for working out daily. Don’t skip this. Make sure to get off the couch and get your heart rate up. Do it daily. Try to work it into your morning schedule. If you have kids, take them for a walk or go to the playground. If you need to make some phone calls, take your cell phone and walk while you talk. Hit the gym ASAP, Do whatever you have to do to get your heart rate up DAILY.
- Don’t eat out for 2 weeks. That may suck a lot. After two weeks, your body will have adapted to the right food and you will more than likely not have the cravings which you probably disagree with. Well, prove me wrong by testing my theory.
- Blog about it. Adam Baker is now blogging his weight loss story at Man vs Fat. You could do it for free through Wordpress, Posterous or Tumblr. Spread the word and get others to help you out.
I could go on, but now it is up to you to do it. So stop making excuses and start making positive changes.
Have a good one…

Dave,
Great post! I am currently in a quest to try and redesign my life, to include MUCH healthier eating, as well as a morning workout routine. You had some fantastic tips here, and I plan on putting many (if not all of them to good use).
I just can’t believe you stayed on that schedule for 2 years! I can barely get up before 7, let alone 5….

I love this post! I often wish people realized how much better you will feel when you workout, eat right, and stay productive. I tell myself that if only people realized how great they’d feel, they’d do it. But I know that’s not necessarily true. It comes back to making excuses, which you addressed quite well in your post!
I’m surprised your morning breakfast didn’t say anything about protein— to me, I can’t eat just fruit and carbs for breakfast or I’d be hungry an hour later.
My hubby and I very rarely eat out. And when we do date nights, we’ve stopped going to restaurants b/c when we did, we felt like CRAP afterwards. It’s really incredible how your body responds to eating out compared to a well-balanced meal from home. Again…if only everyone KNEW!
