Fat or Debt? How About Neither

On the go towards health and wealth
Recently, Adam Baker started ManvsFat. It is a site dedicated to following his journey to get rid of fat and become a healthy person. When Baker launched this site, he posed this question to all of his readers: Would you rather be in debt or fat? My question is why either?

I understand the point that Adam was getting at. He was trying to see which of the two, if mandatory, would you pick. The problem I have is that much of society worldwide has this mentality, but doesn’t even realize it. People are choosing one way or the other all the time. I know plenty of gym-rats that scrape by so they can go to the gym every day for 4 hours and then hit the clubs looking good and spending dough, moola, and making it rain. On the other end, I worked for a financial firm where 50% of the employees were FAT, not overweight, but FAT. They would sit in their desk all day and eat shit, but had a fairly decent bank account. The thing to ponder is why so many people choose one thing over the other.

Opportunities are all around us. I try to be aware of them, but I know I am passing up on thousands everyday. Well, the same goes for the broke gym rats and the bank-rollin’ cubicle folks. Why choose one lifestyle over the other? Why not implement both? I hate when people don’t take advantage of the great opportunities that are right in their face. Being fit and having a fat wallet can be had, but too often people just SETTLE.

I plan on writing a post on settling in the near future, but let me discuss my hatred for the word right now. Settling is not challenging yourself and giving up. If you are settling, you are not going for something bigger, brighter, better in your life. That doesn’t mean saying, “I will settle with this car instead of that.” It has nothing to do with stuff. It has to do with lifestyle decisions. We could all be fit and rich. There is no need to settle for mediocre health and a mediocre retirement living. We could all break the settling barriers and live the life we want. BUT WE CAN NOT SETTLE!!!

I am glad Adam Baker posed his question to the masses. It got the mind flowing and I decided not to settle with just answering that question, but addressing the social issue. We can all be healthy and wealthy, so please do not choose one or the other. Choose BOTH!

LifeEx Action Step’s:

  • Eat healthier. It isn’t hard. Just stop eating out and cook your meals. Stop making excuses.
  • Get your heart rate up EVERYDAY. When I hear news reports saying minor exercise 3 days a week is good, I laugh. Get your heart rate up at least once a day and your metabolism will help you out.
  • Just stop making excuses. And when you do, ask what is really important.

Have a good one…

    Hey Dave,
I like your idea here. Lifestyle design means you can design a life exactly how you want and go for it. We don’t have to settle for a half-cooked dinner. Well done all the way, baby!!! :)

    Hi Dave,

I would agree with you, it is not a choice, there is no reason not to have both.

Great question…I think too many people are stuck on the idea that just can’t have it all…It would be nice for us to change that thought process…I can’t wait to hear more!!

Glad you enjoyed Dawn. I think understanding the perspective of ‘choices’is HUGE. Too often we run with the idea of having to have the worst of this or that. Why not say screw that and just go after the best of both worlds?

      Thanks for commenting Dawn….

I’m in complete agreement with you on settling. I know so many people who do settle. Guys will date girls and put up with an insane amount of shit just because a girl is hot and they’re getting laid, yet everything else about that girls is a pain in the ass. People put up with jobs because they feel like victims. Settling is no way to live :) .

Hey, great reflection on this issue. All to often we DO choose one. While I’ve been fairly passionate about my debt for going on 2 years, I’ve ignore my fat for many more than that!

Ultimately, though I AM focused on both. I’m choosing to be neither fat nor in debt (over time). ;-) Appreciate all your continued support!

No worries Adam. I hope you didn’t see my reflection as harping on ya. I was more approaching the idea of how people just focus on one or the other instead of all aspects. Thanks for commenting!!!

I agree, Dave – it seems like people have a tendency to think these two focuses are mutually exclusive. Part of the reason I left my business to “blaze my own path” was so I could focus on becoming financially secure while having the opportunity to pursue an active, fit, and healthy lifestyle!

Your two reasons are definitely two reasons why I left the 9-5….
