This is the story of my best flight ever….
I sat in Terminal A4 of San Francisco International Airport, better known as SFO, waiting for my flight to board for Sydney. I knew the travel industry was hit hard, but I was still surprised to see so few people sitting in the terminal with me.
Around 9:45, one of the Qantas agents called for all First Class and Business Flyers. The 20 rows nearest the back of the plane loaded. And there I sat with about 10 other people curious as to how many rows were left. The agent blared over the loud speaker for everyone else to board.
I entered the plane hoping that there would be no one sitting next to me. Unfortunately, there was a mother and child in my row with me. But there was no one in the row directly in front of us or to the side of us. My luck was looking up.
I asked one of the many Stewards if I could take a seat in the empty row so I could relax a little better. He said if it was empty when the doors were closed I could do so.
Not but 2 minutes later and a couple with a kid and one of their mothers sat in front of me. Disappointed, I still clinged to the hope that no one would sit next to them which was also an empty row.
I knew I would be sitting a lot so I stood up and stretched. I felt a pat on my shoulder with this pudgy white Australian guy walking away. He was calling me toward him, but did not say a word. I now thought, Damn it! Am I getting in trouble for standing until they absolutely need me to sit. Did this guy get pissed about me asking for the neighborless seat!?”
He kept walking farther away from me as I started to try and catch him. He stopped right before the First Class curtain and pointed at me and the front row of Business. I was thoroughly confused. All I had asked for was to move up a row. I sat wondering if he was getting somone to yell at me or if I had just been given the present of the year. Sure enough the other stewardess said, “Think of it as a free upgrade.”
JACKPOT!!!
For someone as tall and lanky as I, this was heaven. I had 4 feet in front of me. There was no one sitting in the two seats next to me. I also received meal upgrades. I was able to flip, toss, and turn an which way to sleep better on my journey. Life could not have been better. And all came just from me asking if I could move politely. There was no reason for me receiving the right to move like such. Just the act of trying to move and askinging let to the JACKPOT.
So next time you get on a plane, work the magic and try to hit the Jackpot.
