(This is Part 3 in the 6 Months to Freedom Series. I’d suggest starting this series with Part 1 & Part 2 before jumping into Part 3 here. Have an amazing day!)
_______________
One day. Someday. In time. In the future. Sound familiar?
We tend to think that “someday” or “in the future” will come, but it never does. It doesn’t. Trust me, I have tried establishing goals with these vague timelines and I have failed more times than not.
We must have tangible aspects to our goal to succeed. Whether it’s the goal itself or the approach that needs this structured application, it all comes down to preventing failure in the easiest way possible.
The Magic Number
I could say 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month, but there is a basic reason I established 6 months. 6 months is how long it took me to go from no direction to on a plane headed to Australia.
One of the mental blocks to success at finding freedom is not realizing this is going to take some time. It won’t happen overnight.
6 months is a realistic goal because you can make significant changes to how you live your life while making a dent financially on either debt or the fund that allows you to do whatever you want.
Can it be done sooner and can it take longer? Absolutely. However, we need some tangible set date to make this a reality. Stop saying, ”Someday,” and start saying, “On this date…”
Setting the Date…& Reminders
Use whatever calendar platform you like, but set reminders on it every month out for the next 6 months. The reason we need to set this goal and set reminders, at minimum, every month out is to actually succeed. In the past, I have set a date without reminders and the day I was ‘supposed’ to accomplish the goal continued to creep up on me with me not remembering nor taking action.
That’s It
I could go on and on about what else needs to be done to set a firm date to freedom, but you get the point. There is no need for me to continue on. Sometimes, the simpler the step, the likelier you are to follow through.
So, that’s it. You have one task today. Set a date 6 months out and reminders every month up until that date. I’d suggest using Google Calendar as it syncs to your Google account (inc. android-based phone) anywhere. Obviously, there is iCal for Mac and iPhone users as well.
