Purses

Let me start by saying, I have nothing against purses. I understand they are useful and can be practical. Obviously, they are not for my minimalist life, but I will accept their need.

Now, let me rage on purses.1398966937_3e3f8c8333

Gucci – $2450 ….   Louis Vuitton – $2010 …. Coach – $798

(***You may click the link to see, but DO NOT purchase***)

You hear that sound just now. That’s my jaw hitting the floor. And that was after just seeing the first purses to come up upon entering these sites.

Why in the world does anybody need to have a purse, or excuse me—handbag, that costs well more than a week’s salary at minimum?

Women, you have no argument with me here. I asked a friend, whose wedding I was in, why she would buy a purse for $1,000 when I could get her the knock off, that mind you she couldn’t tell the difference, for $20. She said that it was more the idea. If that is the case I don’t ever want to take those ideas and materialize them. That is unless I come up with some product people are willing to pay me 200 times the cost for.

Black, white, beige, and one other of choice. All for $20 each. Those are the purses I found that looked decent to myself and another lady at Target. Those should cover all ranges of clothing choices and still total under $100. The darn things do the exact same thing.

Please ladies, start cutting your need for designer purses. Here are my purse facts:

  • You don’t need more than 4 purses and I actually think 2 is plenty.
  • Your money is being wasted on something that cost $10 to make.
  • People who care about your purse style are broke. (Very few exceptions)
  • My wallet costs $10 and does most of the same things.
  • Money doesn’t grow in $2,010 purses. (Nor on trees)
  • The $1,000 you save by not buying a designer purse will be worth $10k in 30 years if you put it in your IRA.

Ladies, I really could go on, but the disappointed tears will continue to fall if I do.

I am asking you, the beautiful women that grant us ungrateful men with your time and effort, to please stop the purse habit. Become a purse minimalist, we will all be better off in the end.

Thanks for taking my punishment….Now it’s your time to dole it out. Click here to comment aka tell me why I’m wrong……

Have a great day ladies and gent’s…..

Haha I was just arguing with my girlfriends about this! They have all spent a few hundred dollars on a purse or two, and I have not. A while ago I needed a purse for a black-tie dinner, so I waited until Macy’s was having a sale, then collected coupons and bought a $100 clutch for $25.

And you are right, two purses is enough.

I’m a fan of free tote bags. If I want something to match an outfit, I’ll head to NY & Company and buy a stylish, inexpensive purse, then take care of it so it lasts a while.

I am the kind of girl who would rather go camping with my fiance than receive an engagement ring so I know I’m not the norm…

  3. I liked reading this post! You are very opinionated. I guess its all about usability and not the brand. It’s practicality that feeds the wise. I am a bagaholic before but I just realize the importance of knowing the use of the product before actually buying it.

Great Comment! I am very opinionated which is good and bad. I am trying to be more positive, but I think everyone, like you, enjoyed my comical outlook on this series.

Thanks for stopping by…hope to hear from you again

Purses are integral to my life. Do I spend a lot constantly upon my purses? No. But like any frugal person, I bought high quality, beautiful and classic purse styles. I have a black leather purse that is 10 years old and still going strong. It’s Coach and I’m unapologetic when I carry it around. I do live in an affluent community, but it’s more than just the status. Minimalism is about getting rid of things that you don’t use or have little to no value for you, correct? It’s about simplifying your life and clearing out the dross. I may live on money that is around the poverty line, but I am never getting rid of my pretty purses. In this case, I’m retaining the beautiful in my life.

That being said, I think that Jackie BUYING a clutch was overkill. That’s why you can rent purses. Quite frankly, clutches have no place in my life or my purse collection as they are minimally useful.

Well, I do have to say that unless you are a female who can get by with using your pants or coat pockets, a purse is an essential item. You would be proud of me though – A few years ago, I purchased up a fair trade hemp purse from Whole Foods that supported those who made it. It cost a mere $9.99. It is more like a tiny passport bag with a long strap so I can wear it over my shoulder (which gives me peace of mind while traveling and in cities) It is very small but big enough to hold my keys, a cloth folding wallet, some gum, a smallish vial of anti-bac hand spray and a pen. It also has a pocket in the front that holds a small bottle of eye drops, a lip balm and some tinted lip gloss. I reworked it some time back by taking off the originally wooden toggle bead that held it closed and I put on an artistic metal clasp and some delicate hanging beads. Not only is it functional now, but it is also a work of art and it goes with everything I own and for every occasion. I am very happy with it and I see it being the only purse I will ever own. The fact that it is very small forced me to stay a minimalist when it comes to my purse items. I find that is the key to being and staying minimalist – stay small and only own what you can fit in a small space. Better for your bank account, your piece of mind and in this case – a tiny purse is better on the back.
