Facing Life’s Fears

As a kid, I feared nothing. I once jumped from the top of the jungle gym…and survived. As a kid, I said, “Hi,” to everyone I came across. As a kid, I I told my parents, with good explanation, why I didn’t want to be spanked any longer. As a kid, I feared nothing.

As an adult, I find fears.

When Did This Happen

I am not quite sure when this happened exactly. Sometime between Osh Kosh B Gosh and paying for rent, I found fear.

My guess would be that girls, puberty and high school were the main contributers and starting point to my anxiety and fear. For whatever reason, I saw everyone else fearing things so I thought I was to fear things too. The questions I ask today though are as follows…

  • Why and where did fear come to be?
  • Did our ancestors thousands of years ago fear?
  • Did the caveman have fears?

In other words, does fear purely exist because we let it?

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. –    Nelson Mandela

Denial is Reality

For the longest time, I acted like I feared nothing. I was a man and men fear nothing. Luckily, I learned from this stupidity and accepted the fact I feared things. Once I stopped denying I feared things, I was able to face them head on and try to overcome their power.

Usually the things we deny the most are the most real things out there. Denial is a way of making our minds accept failure, accept less than what we are capable of. In actuality, if we skip the whole fearing part and move straight towards resolution, solution, and/or progression, we rarely have the sense that fear is stronger than our own approach.

Different Masks

Fears have masks of all looks. Everyone has their own fears and no fear is too small or too big if it has any control over that person.  Recognizing the fears we have as individuals is just as important as recognizing the fears of a society.

For a minute, think of three things you would love to do in your life. It might be starting a family or traveling the world or getting your law degree. Now, think of the three fears that are holding you back from accomplishing this. In this example, you first point out the things you want to do and then point out the things that fear you. We often separate the two as if they have no correlation, but they do.

Now, some of you may say, “I know exactly why I don’t have a million bucks right now. It’s because the opportunity to have a million bucks has yet to be afforded to me.” If you think about it though, we all control our own destiny. Sure, someone could walk in this room right now and shoot me, but 99.9% of our destiny is still in our hands. We can’t look at the extreme scenarios and use them as excuses to us not facing the fear of our future.

The fear masks we all experience only exist because we let them. If we choose to ignore their presence, we can remove any and all masks as they would have no bearing on the truth we are facing without their presence.

I Fear the Mirror

I see the future being video. I see it dominating the landscape. Whether we admit it or not, we all love visual stimulation. Video is our future and I want to be a part of that future.

It should be as simple as that. I think something would benefit my life so I do it. However, you have forgotten about fear.

One of my fears in life is not being enjoyed. I want others to enjoy my company whether that be by listening, entertaining, understanding, sympathizing, etc. To do this on a broader scale than just in my physical community, I need to embrace the capabilities of such things as vlogging.

In other words, I have to face the fear in the mirror. I need to face my own face looking back at me on these electronic portals.

The fear I face is not being enjoyed via videos. I know there are many people who enjoy my writing, but I want to capture those who may not enjoy reading, but love watching. So, I am facing the fear.

Over the next year, I am going to post 1 video at minimum per week. It may be in place of a post. It may be located in the sidebar. It may be in the newsletter. It will be somewhere at minimum once per week.

As I see fear as something either ignored or embraced, I need to take this step to eliminate the fear. Hopefully, you can do the same with your own fears.

Your fears will only persist if you persist to let them live on.

  1. David! You are amazing on camera. Facing your fear was a blessing for all of us. I am working on a video today – not for my blog but another, and it really is scary, but silly scary.

When ever I get scared or fearful, I ask myself.
“How will this thing I am scared of hurt me”
“Will this thing I am scared of hold me back if I avoid it”
“Will this thing I am scared of impact my life in 5 years”

If my answers are no, yes, no – I dump the fear and move forward.

So glad to SEE you today! Great job.

Awesome. Facing a fear right here in this post about it. And great job! You have a strong on-camera presence and a good voice for it. I think it’s a really good addition to the blog and something not a lot of people are doing.

I am petrified of being on video. I am terrified to even Skype. It’s really absurd and I should outgrow it. But I’m going to keep putting it off for now, lol.

Thanks Courtney and Chase for the positive feedback. Positive feedback changes my approach and effort in more ways than anything else. I will be writing a piece on positive feedback soon.

Chase – I felt strange about meeting a blogger too but thankfully you were cool. Now I have this rush to do more that I fear.

Great stuff on putting yourself out there …. its all about taking that virtual or physical leap – you just have to do it.

Not to quibble with you, but for me the written word will always be more powerful& have more depth than any video, I am a rare breed who prefers a book over film any day, I may be showing my age here. Though that said, I am not crazy enough, to not see (esp with younger people) there are many prefer the video medium, but they are two distinct forms of communication.

Awesome job, David. It’s inspiring to see you write a post about facing fears, and then you facing one right in context.

I have been letting fear plague my life. Unfortunately, I am so scared of everything that I am letting it keep me from living my life. I am planning on changing that this year. We’ll see how it goes.

David, you’re already, what some people call it, a natural on camera, so the only place you can go from here is up! Congrats on facing your fear and conquering it!

  9. Hey, David. I can’t even let you know how much I love this post. Accepting the fact that I have fears was one of my biggest steps in determining I wanted to live my “life of 24.”

For years I used to avoid heights, but once I accepted that I was afraid of them, I felt how exhilarating life can be. I packed up on a trip with my mom and went rock climbing in the Rockies.

You have a cheering section forming each time you sit at that camera.

    Peace out and keep living.
